Paisley is a two-year-old tri-color girl with a white body with lots of black freckles and a black and white head with brown markings. But, her 30-pound body is a little too long, her legs are a little short, her coal black eyes are set far apart, and she has a short muzzle. She may not be an exemplar of the breed; nevertheless, any slight physical deficits are made up for by her tail. It is the tail of an angel, a nonstop, thumping motor powered by an affectionate personality, the mirror of her soul, the expression of all the very best qualities one could want in a friend: happiness, loyalty, curiosity, empathy, and courage.
It would be unfair to burden her with the label “perfect.” Paisley is a bit of an escape artist, which we are finding ways to deal with. She is still learning how to manage walking on a leash when there are so many fascinating things to experience just beyond her reach. And at times, she is a glutton, much to the consternation of her older ACES friend Ginger, whose bowl of food invariably seems more interesting than her own. But she is such a kind soul. She is sweet and affectionate, deferential toward us and to Ginger, and she is all too willing to roll on her back for a belly rub. She is friendly to guests, but first sounds the alarm when a stranger knocks. She loves meeting the other dogs in the neighborhood. We have yet to introduce her to any small children, but only because we haven’t had the opportunity.
Paisley loves to move, and it’s a joy to see her run – more of a floppy gallop than an actual sprint. Everything is interesting – every bird, every squirrel, every unexpected noise – and she loves to follow them. But her preferred position is on a couch next to a friend, dog or human, which suits us all fine.
